Biography

Grew up in Maryland in USA this 6'9” tall athlete showed his strength in discus throw. Father Shive, who coached the 1988 Indian Olympic track team, was a great help. Vikas' personal best throw of 66.28 mts, is also the national record achieved in 2012.

In the 2008 Beijing Olympics he failed to reach the final but four years later he finished eighth with an effort of 65.20 mts. Vikas won his first gold medal in the Asian championship in 2013 held in Pune with a throw of 64.90 mts.

A year later in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, he won another gold for India with a throw of 63.64 mts and that feat made him the second Indian to an athletics gold, 56 years after Milkha Singh had won the 440 yds at the Cardiff Games in 1958. Consistency was his forte but still he could make it to his fourth Olympics in Rio only because IAAF lowered the entry standards to have more athletes taking part in the Games.

His best in recent times has been a humble 62-03 in the Asian Championship in Wuhan last year and a ninth place in the Beijing World championship. Yet for all this IAAF has rated him as the current highest ranked Asian.
