Biography

The London Olympics bronze medallist qualified for Rio after a gold medal performance at the Asian Olympic Qualification tournament in Astana, Kazhakstan. It has been a long run for this Haryana wrestler. The bronze medal in the 2006 Doha Asian Games was the start of his growing career.

Four years later at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, he won the gold. In his first Olympics in London it turned out to a bronze and then at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games once again he returned with a gold. Then at the Incheon Asian Games, Yogeshwar he won the gold medal.

A DSP with the Haryana Police, this stalwart started wrestling at the age of 8 years. The bronze in London Games in 60 kg disappointed him. “Gold is my aim” and that is what is driving him on to Rio.

After the weight re-jig, Yogeshwar now is in higher weight category but he has been doing well in this section and that is the hope. The only Indian wrestler to have qualified in four Olympics, including Rio, Yogeshwar is looking to sign off in style.
