Two Indians to contest U-19 boys' final

Macau: Two Indians, Veer Chotrani, 9/16 seed and Yash Fadte, the 5/8 seed will contest the final of the Under-19 boys' competition in the Asian Junior Individual squash championship here on Sunday.

It was a great day for India on Saturday when two others, Neel Joshi in the U-17 boys' section and Yuvna Gupta in the U-15 section too had made it to the final to ensure India had a rich collection of medals in this's championship better than last year in Chennai when the returns were one gold, one silver and four bronzes.

The biggest surprises of the day came in the U-19 section where Veer continuing with his good form fought his way past the Pakistani opponent Harish Qasim in four games. Yash Fadte on the other hand had a bigger task beating the unseeded Hamza Sharif, also of Pakistan. Yash and Hamza traded two games each before the Indian sealed the win with a steady show in the deciding fifth game. On paper Neel's win as ¾ seed over the 5/8 seed Ammeshenraj Chandaran of Malaysia was in keeping with the seedings but the contest could not have gone closer. Neel was up two games then squandered that advantage before regaining his bearings in the decider. Yuvna's win was creditable in that as the ¾ seed she had upset the number two seed Tse Yee Lam Toby of Hong Kong.

Reacting to the happy tidings, the newly elected Secretary General of SRFI Mr Cyrus Poncha said, “this will be another first for Indian squash where we have both boys in the U-19 final..Absolutely outstanding achievement. Really happy and proud the way the boys have played.”
