Experienced hand, he turned professional in 1997 and has won in all 14 professional titles including 10 in the Indian Tour. In 2008, he won the inaugural Indian Masters, which was part of that year's European Tour. Shiv's father worked at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club and that is also where he picked up the sport at the age of 10.

Self taught mostly, Shiv was a caddie initially. Steady progress featured his rise as he improved his ranking from 38 in 2006 to 32 in 2007. The 2008 Indian Masters brought him a windfall, not only in terms of his stature but the win in the midst of leading golfers of the world earned him a handsome prize money.

He happened to be the only player with sub-par scores on all the four days of the tournament. Shiv was ranked 388 before the tournamnet but the success not only catapulted him to 161 but also he topped the Asian tour Order of Merit. As per the July 11 cut off date, Shiv like Anirban came into the elite field of 60 for Rio.
