Qualification pathway for the 2020 Olympics- Badminton (Singles and Doubles events)

In 2020 Tokyo Olympics there are a total of five events for both men and women. Events in the upcoming Olympics are i) Men’s Singles, ii) Women’s Singles, iii) Men’s Doubles , iv) Women’s Doubles and v) Mixed Doubles
 
In this eighth series we will see how Badminton Association of India (BAI) has a chance of sending at least one to a maximum of eight badminton players in five different events. 
 
A total of 172 badminton players will participate in five events at the Olympics. The host nation will be guaranteed one place per gender and they can increase this number by winning quota places in qualification events.
 
   Badminton Players are selected through the world ranking list used by Badminton World Federation (BWF) for ranking players based on the points accumulated by them in various events approved by BWF.
                        
                       Men’s and Women’s Singles
 
BWF will allocate 34 individual quota places per event to the highest ranked athletes, respecting the maximum quota allocation per Country.  Indian Badminton players should be inside the top 16 players according to BWF World Ranking list released for Olympics on 20 April, 2020 to get the two quota places in each of the Singles event.
 
All the players playing in singles should be inside the BWF allocated 34 places for Olympics to get a minimum of one player representing the country in at least one singles events.
                                     
                        Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles
 
In the Doubles events BWF will allocate 16 quota places per event to the highest ranked pairs according to the maximum quota allocation policy followed by world federation for each country. Indian doubles pair should be inside the top 8 pairs according to BWF World Ranking list released for Olympics on 20 April, 2020 to get six pairs playing in three different events.
 
All the pairs playing in doubles should be inside the BWF allocated 16 players to get the opportunity of representing the country in at least one doubles event.
 
Important Note: - i) India players should be careful in choosing the events to play, as it will play a major role in deciding the ranking of a player or pair.
           
 ii) All the players in singles and doubles events has to get the approval of BAI in order to represent the country in Tokyo Olympics
 
BWF World Rankings will be crucial for our badminton players, as it gives them an opportunity to qualify 8 players in five different events. This will not only increase the number of qualified athletes but also increases our chance of getting a maximum amount of medals in the Olympics from badminton contingent for our country.
