Biography

She was the youngest Indian athlete in Beijing Olympics in 2008. That same year she had won the silver medal in the 400m event at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune and a gold in the 4 x 400 m relay. With continued improvement, she emerged first in the Open nationals in Kolkata in 2011.

 

Poovamma was consistently in good touch in the three Asian Grand Prixs in 2012 in Bangkok, winning two gold and a silver medal. The next year also she won the gold in the Bangkok Asian Grand Prix. The Kodagu girl was part of the Indian team for the World Athletics championship in Moscow in 2013.

 

There she also was a link in the 4 x 400 quartet. In the Incheon Games, 2014, Poovamma was part of the gold medal winning 4 x 400 quartet which set a new Games record (3:28:68).

 

Her qualification for the Rio Games came in Bangalore where alongwith Anilda Thomas, Tintu Luka and Nirmala clocked 3:27.88s at the Grand Prix to secure the berth.
