Biography

One of the three Indians to qualify for marathon in Rio (a first since 1960 Rome Olympics), Rawat was an early qualifier after running sub 2h:19m mark in the World military Games held in South Korea in October last year. He clocked 2:18 there. At the Mumbai marathon, Rawat finished 10th but improved his timing to 2:15:48 which was a course record by an Indian bettering the 2012 mark of Ram Singh Yadav (2:16.59).

A havildar in the army, Rawat has been fully into training now, initially at Dharmasala and then at Udhagamandalam and the training inspires him to come with a good show in Rio. His career began in 2010 when he took running seriously. In 2013 he ran the 5000 m in 13.55 m to win his first gold medal.

At the SAF games in Guwahati in February this year Rawat picked the gold with a time of 2:15:18 hrs. He is coached by Surinder Singh Bhandari. With weekly world load of 250 km Rawat is aiming for a sub 2:09:59 time in Rio. Such is his commitment that he had decided to postpone his wedding to sometime after the Olympics.
