Mangal spent much of his early life in refugee camps in Pakistan, where he began playing cricket. His talent was spotted by then-Afghanistan team coach Taj Malik, who convinced Mangal to pursue a career in cricket. A former Afghanistan captain, Mangal has played more than 30 one-day internationals for the team since he was skipper of its inaugural ODI against Scotland in 2009. He has two centuries to his name including 129 from 123 balls against United Arab Emirates in December 2014, and averages 35.55. Mangal also scored 52 and 48 during that ODI series, following successful warm-up tour of Australia and New Zealand in September and October 2014 where he scored 85 against the Australian Capital Territory and 77* against Auckland. He was succeeded as captain by Mohammad Nabi in 2010.
