India start their Hockey campaign in style, beat Ireland 3-2

India has begun their Hockey campaign with a bang. They beat Ireland in the opening encounter, 3-2. For India, Rupinder Pal Singh and V.R. Raghunath scored the goals. For Ireland the scorers were John Jermyn and Conor Harte. India will take on Germany in the next match; they will be playing two times defending champions Germany on Monday.

Ireland tried to create early pressure and tested the Indian defence. Both the teams remained goalless at the end of the first quarter. India kept the pressure up by trying to get penalty corners. Indian finally took the lead as Raghunath hammered the goal through a penalty corner at the start of the second quarter.

India kept on the pressure on Ireland in the second quarter. India lost a chance when a great through ball to Nikkin went just wide off the mark to Ramandeep. It was a great opportunity lost but India kept on the pressure. Rupinder Singh scored another goal for India and it led Ireland 2-0 at the end of the second quarter.

Despite being 2 goals behind, Ireland kept on making great moves. Ireland also managed to get 4 penalty corners but all wasted. Ireland, however managed to score a goal at the end of the third quarter. India led Ireland 2-1 at the end of the third quarter. Ireland kept on the momentum and looked to score in the last 15 minutes to equal India; However, It was Rupinder from India who scored the third goal for India.

India was now looking safe as it was leading 3-1 and only some more minutes were left to the end of the match. Ireland managed to score another goal when only 5 minutes remained in the game. In the end, India emerged the winner by 3 goals to 2 and gave a great start to India’s hockey campaign in Rio Olympics. India is 8 times champion of Olympic gold in Hockey.
