India ends with a 2-2 draw with Japan in Women's hockey opener at Rio games

India took on Japan in a Group B match in the Women's hockey tournament at Rio Olympics 2016 today. The match was played at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Deodoro. It was a historic appearance for the Indian team as they took part in the event after a gap of 36 years.

Last time Indian women’s hockey team was seen in Moscow Olympics in the year 1980. While India ranks 13th, Japan ranks 10th in women’s hockey. At the start of the match, the Japanese team looked aggressive while the Indian team looked defensive.

India soon however made some good moves but Preeti Dubey squandered a great opportunity as the Japanese goalkeeper was beaten but the striker could not connect. A great opportunity lost right at the start.

The Indian team made several attempts in the mid field at this point of time but Japanese defense was strong enough to stop the Indian offensive. Soon after that Japan got a penalty corner and converted.
