How to Become a Professional Weightlifter in India?

Weightlifters are spread all over the country but they are not able to find proper routes to reach their ultimate aim of representing India and win medals for the country in International Competitions. This article will show different paths available for the weightlifters and guide them through the paths, so they can achieve their dreams.
 
Way-1
 
A student pursuing education in school or college can follow this path to become a professional weightlifter. First the student should approach the physical education director (PT) in school or college and enroll themselves in coaching for Weightlifting sport. Then the weightlifter with the help of PT should find out the weight category they are capable of winning a medal in inter school or inter college meet. After that by winning medals in each level like district and state, they can move to the next level.  
 
An Aspiring weightlifter has to be in the top positions at national level competitions organized by Weightlifting Federation of India (WFI), so they are selected for the national camp .WFI will select the best weightlifters to represent India in international competitions by organizing trails at the national camp.
 
Way-2
 
 If the weightlifter has not pursued education, then the way to move forward is through government or private academies. This way can also be followed by weightlifters who do not have proper facilities in their school or college.
 
 The person can register himself in a private or government academy and with the help of coaches, sportspersons should find out the right weight category to participate at competitions. After that, the Weightlifter should start competing in the state level meets. When the athlete wins medals in state level championship, the person will be selected by the state federation to participate in the national championship. 
 
Otherwise if the sportsperson is recruited in government sectors, then he or she can use the opportunities available there to compete in national level competitions.

Way-3
 
 Weightlifters can make use of the opportunity to compete at Khelo Games (https://kheloindia.gov.in/) to get a place in national camp for India .A Weightlifter in school can approach them to participate in Khelo School Games. If the person is approved by school, then he or she can participate in the state level meet. 
 
Weightlifter should win a medal in state event to represent the state at Khelo India School Games at National level. It is a very big opportunity for the person to display his or her talent to all the national level coaches.In addition to it, the competition at national level will be telecasted in various media channels.
 
If the weightlifter has passed the age for school games, then the person can compete at the Khelo India state meet and win medals to represent the state at Khelo India Youth Games. It will also give  an opportunity of getting a place in national camp.
 
There are different categories for athletes according to their age:-
 
   o Senior (Greater than or equal to 15 years of age)
   o Junior (15-20 years of age)
   o Youth (13-17 years of age)
 
Important point: - Entries of weightlifters will be accepted for national events only when the weightlifter has met the weight category for that particular event. Athletes of various categories youth, junior and senior should apply for the events which are suited to their age and weight.
 
Weightlifters can use any of the above paths in order to achieve their ultimate aim of becoming a professional weightlifter and win medals for the country.
