Biography

The Haryana lad came into prominence when he broke the 15-year old national record in the 200 mts with his bronze medal finish in the Asian Championship in Wuhan, China. Dharambir clocked 20.66 s, to erase Anil Kumar's 2073s record. Hailing from a farmer community, Dharambir is proud of his background even as he shot into national prominence.

He had won a silver medal in the Open nationals in Chennai in 2012 with 21.00s effort. In the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010 his effort was 21.20s. A kabaddi player to start with , Dharambir switched to high jump as per his coach's advice. Then was part of the 4 x 400 m relay team before focussing on 100 and 200 m sprints.

The big moment for this Haryana young man came early in July in the Indian Grand Prix in Bangalore where he improved his own national record in 200m to 20.45s. The event was a qualification test for Rio aspirants and since 20.50s was the base mark for 200m , Dharmbir made it into the Indian contingent.

He is the first Indian inmore than three decades to qualify in the sprint event after P. Subramaniam in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. For some one who was slapped a two-year suspension in 2012 for evading a dope test, Dharambir has come a long way in his quest for glory.
