The Italian from Umbria won the 2011 Italian national Superstock championship, riding a Ducati, and finished runner-up in the 2011 FIM Superstock 1000 Cup. Petrucci had been a test rider for Ducati’s Superbike project and in 2012 got his first taste of the World Championship, jumping straight into the premier class with the IodaRacing Project.

The in-house Ioda bike proved too slow halfway through the season and the team switched to a Suter-BMW. Nonetheless, Petrucci showed some good form in his first year and continued with the team in 2013, leading the way for the outfit and scoring 11 points finishes. For 2014, his team switched to ART equipment with limited preseason testing time, and then a wrist injury sustained at the Jerez GP hindered his mid-season progress.

Petrucci persevered to gain further experience and earned himself a move to the Pramac Racing team for 2015. During 2015 he scored a fantastic second place in Silverstone, gaining many fans with his friendly and open personality. He would remain with the Octo Pramac Racing team in 2016, but with increased support from Ducati..
