Biography

Made his India debut in 2008. Started archery training at the age of 14 years under Mithu Da. In 2008 he moved to the Tata Archery Academy where he had the benefit of being trained by the Korean coach Lim Chae Wong. As a junior he was a member of the silver medal winning team at the Youth world championship in Poland in 2011.

The same year in Dhaka in the Asian Grand Prix, he won a gold in the men's individual recurve and mixed team (with Rimil Buriuly). Atanu has won a silver in the mixed team event in world championship in Poland 2014 and a bronze in 2013 championship in Columbia. For the Rio Olympics, which is his debut, Atanu edged out experienced competitors like Jayanta Talukdar and Mangal Singh Champia in the national trials to be the lone entrant in the men's section.

Since he is ranked 22 in the world, he may not be in with a chance for a medal but reaching the final round would be a great moment. Experts believe he has the ability to spring a surprise and the Rio experience will make him a richer archer even if he does not make a substantial mark.
