Achievements

  • In 2010 he won silver at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. 
  • In April 2012 at age 18, he became the youngest Indian boxer to secure an Olympic berth when he qualified for the 2012 Games in London.

 

Biography

The first Indian to qualify for the Rio Olympics, Thapa was the youngest Indian boxer in London 2012. Seeing his potential in his younger days, he was chosen to represent India in the 52kg category in the Junior world championship. Though he won only bronze, the coach was satisfied that the boy would go far.

 

At the second Youth world amateur championship, which was the qualification event for 2010 youth olympics, Thapa was touted as a sure winner but lost the final to take silver. He qualified for the Youth Olympics where again it was a silver medal in the 54 kg category. He qualified for the 2012 London Olympics 56 kg after winning the qualification event in Astana Kazhakstan.

 

But went out in the first round. In 2013 Thapa was the youngest Indian to win a gold in the Asian Confederation championship and followed it up with a quartefinal finish in his debut in world championship. He failed in 2014 in both Commonwealth and Asian Games but bounced back for Rio by qualifying through an event in China in March this year.He is ranked three in the AIBA's world rankings.
