Biography

The ace discus thrower was Seema Antil earlier before she married her coach Ankush Punia, a former discus thrower, whe had taken part in the Athens Olympics 2004. Seema qualified for the Rio Games, her third olympics after 2004 Athens and 2012 London Games.

 

She heaved the discus to a distance of 62.62 m, the season's best at the Pat Young's Thrower Classic at Salinas (California)in the US to go well past the qualification mark of 61.00 m and in the process won the gold beating 2008 olympic champion Stephanie Brown-Trafton of USA.

 

A hurdler and long jumper in her childhood before taking to discus throw, Seema came to limelight in 2000 when she won the gold in the World junior championship held in Santiago but was stripped off this after getting tested positive for the drug psedoephedrine.

 

Came back in 2002 world junior championship in Kingston to win a bronze. A silver in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Melbourne followed. In 2010 Commonwealth Games beld in Delhi, she won a bronze and in the London Olympics in 2012 she finished 13th. The year 2014 proved better when Seema won the silver in Glasgow Commonwealth Games and a gold in the Incheon Asian Games.
