  • In 2008 she was awarded the Doctorate of Letters (Honorary Ph. D.) by the Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute University in Chennai, India.
  • In January 2006 she was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award. 
  • She was named Newcomer of the Year of 2005 by the Women's Tennis Association
  • She received an Arjuna award in 2004, India's second highest national recognition for achievement in sport.
  • She was awarded Padma Bushan in 2016.

She has been the most successful female tennis player of the country. Initially a singles player of note she has beaten some of the well known players in the world in her career. Ranked 27 at one time, her singles career was cut short in 2013 after a decade long stay, through a wrist injury. From then on doubles became her mainstay. Currently she is ranked number one in doubles in the world.


She has won a total of 14 medals (including six gold) from Asian, Commonwealth and Afro-Asian games. She has three Grand slam titles each in doubles and mixed doubles from 2009 onwards. At the London Olympics she had reached the quarterfinals in 2012. She will playing the mixed doubles event with Bopanna and doubles with Prarthana Thombare in Rio.
