Biography

As the highest ranked Indian male player at 12 in world circuit, Srikanth's credentials are strong to get him a berth, the lone Indian in singles, in the badminton competitions of the Rio Olympics.

One of his greatest achievment was beating two time Olympic and five time world champion Lin Dan of China in the 2014 China Open super series to become the first Indian to win a super series men's title. That year saw him featuring in high quality events and reaching fairly high levels even if not capturing titles. In 2015 things began happening.

He rose to his career best rank of 3 in the world and what is more become the first Indian male to win the Swiss Open Grand Prix and later the Indian Open super series title. On both occasions his opponent was the former world junior champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark.

This year in January he reached the semi-final of the Malaysia Masters before winning the Syed Modi International event in Lucknow. Two gold medals in the SAG 2016, singles and doubles. Not one who gets carried away by big wins or occasions in keeping with his mentor and coach Gopi Chand's style, Srikanth carries the hopes of his countrymen as he steps on to the Rio courts. The road ahead is tough but the Indian is confident.
