Achievements

  • He became the first Indian table tennis player to win a singles gold medal at the Commonwealth Games when he won in Melbourne in 2006.
  • He also became the first Indian player to win an event on the Pro Tour, when he won the Egypt Open in Cairo in July 2010.

 

Biography

One of India's top player, ranked 69 th in the world as per June list. He has had a fairly good international career startng with the gold medal win the Commonwealth Championship in Kuala Lumpur in 2004. A professional player now with base in Dusseldorf, Germany, he playes in the European league and in the Germany Bundesliga for club Borussia Dusseldorf.

 

Sharath has won the US Open title in 2010 and in the same year the Egypt Open too. The latter achievement made him the first Indian to win an ITTF Pro title. At the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006 he had won the singles and team gold. In the New Delhi Commonwealth Games, 2010, he partnered Subhajit Saha to win the doubles gold.

 

He had represented India in the 2004 Athens Games and the 2006 Asian Games in Doha. The year 2007 saw him become the first Indian to win the Pyongyong invitational tournament in its 21st edition. Beating world number 19, Lee jung Woo (S Korea) in Japan Pro Tour event in 2007is a highlight of his career so much so, he was the only Indian to get selected for the 2008 Beijing Games.

 

In the run up to Rio qualifiction, Sharath had a indifferent expereince in the South Asia Zone qualifiers, he found his touch in the stage two of the Asian qualification event in Hong Kong in May. Sharath needed to come to the final round and he did that.
